Homemade StrawBerry Ice Cream

Updated: Jul 5, 2018

If you saw my Facebook or Instagram posts from Memorial Day, you know we barbecued ribs and made the FIRST batch of homemade ice cream for the summer! It was fresh strawberry!!! So yummy and just  screams  SUMMER!!!

We make homemade ice cream a few time each summer. I wanted an old fashioned ice cream maker but I knew the novelty of the hand crank would wear off quickly. So instead I found an old fashioned LOOKING ice cream maker with the convenience of ELECTRICITY!!!  It is made by White Mountain. We have had ours for well over 10 years and she is still going strong!!

I usually make simple ice cream recipes and have even been known to use the pre-made ice cream mixes where you just add milk.  They taste great and are perfect when the family wants ice cream now!!  Our favorite strawberry ice cream recipe is not difficult but a bit more involved. It is an old fashioned recipe which uses a custard.

I hope you will give it a try this summer! Your family will be thrilled!!

Recipe

2 cups sugar, divided

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Pinch of salt

3 cups whole milk

4 eggs slightly beaten with

31/2 cups pureed fresh strawberries

3 cups heavy whipping cream

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Stir together 1 1/2 cups of sugar, the flour, salt; set aside.

Gently heat milk on top in a double boiler until hot.

Add 1/4 cup of the hot milk to the dry sugar mixture and stir into a smooth paste. Stir the sugar mixture into the pot of milk; cook stirring constantly, until slightly thickened. Cover and cook 10 minutes.

Add about a quarter of the hot milk/sugar mixture to the beaten eggs and stir to temper the eggs. Add to the remaining hot mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Let cool completely,

Combine strawberries, remaining 1/2 cup sugar, whipping cream, and vanilla. Stir into the cooled custard. Pour into freezer can of an ice cream maker. Mix according to manufacturer's directions and freeze until desired firmness.
